The earliest traces of distillation go back to the remains of clay found in Pakistan that is 5000 years old.
The distillation of hydrosols are made using the methods of hydro or steam distillation. This involves heating a vessel filled with water until the steam rises and moves through the plant material. The volatile and non volatile compounds rise up with the steam. Once it gets in the condenser, it cools and returns to its liquid form. This alchemical transformation gives us essential oils and the by product of hydrosol or floral waters.
Distillation captures the spirit, soul, and essence of the plant. Hydrosols are often overlooked, but they offer many healing benefits. Plants are made up of different energies, and they all have their own healing qualities. Hydrosols can be used as gentle aromatherapy and directly on skin because they are much more diluted than essential oils. This makes them safer to work with. Hydrosols do contain trace amounts of essential oils, making them aromatic, but since they are mostly water, they are very gentle to the senses and to the skin.
I bought my first copper alembic still in the Summer of 2022. Since then, I've been very fascinated and in love with the art of distilling plants. There years and many distillations later, I still have so much to learn. This is an art form that has changed my relationship with plants; helping me to learn more about their cellular waters, and tapping into their consciousness. It is my hope that through my journey of distilling, I will cultivate a deeper connection to herbal medicine and also learn more about myself. With this in mind, my practice will forever keep evolving.
My distillations are made mostly of organic plants that I nurture and grow in abundance from my own garden. Otherwise, they are from the properties of friends, or are carefully foraged in special areas of the mountains when growing in abundance.
